Ancestors 101

I’m often asked how I feel so safe in my body, in my spirit, and in the world—and why connecting with my ancestors comes so naturally to me. The truth? It’s always been a part of my life.

I grew up in a Christian household, and still, ancestral veneration was present. Many of us practice it without even realizing it—think about that framed photo of a passed loved one on the mantle or by the door. That’s an altar, babes. Their love, their protection, their presence was always there for me, even when I didn’t have the language for it.

As I got older and deepened my self-studies, I witnessed the beauty and nuance of ancestral veneration—not just as tradition, but as an unbreakable spiritual connection. Yet, so much of this practice has been demonized, causing many of us to feel unsafe, disconnected, and unaware of the immense power running through us.

This masterclass and its accompanying worksheet are my offering to the community—to help reframe our relationship with our ancestors, heal what’s been severed, and reclaim the joy and security that is our birthright. It’s also about destigmatizing the misconceptions and challenging the religious dogma that has vilified Black ancestral veneration. This isn’t about rebellion—it’s about remembering.

This is also about ensuring that knowledge is rooted in truth. Alongside my own lineage from Tuskegee, Alabama, this class draws wisdom from legendary voices such as:
